Abstract: The aim of the paper is to analyse students trajectories in the swiss education system according to the Capability Approach of the economist Amartya Sen. The target of this theory is to value the real possibilities for people to choose the life they are supposed to prefer. Applied to education, it may renew the equal opportunities analysis by focusing on students real opportunities in their educational trajectories and in the possible encountered constrains. The Swiss case is therefore particularly interesting because it's a complex educative system which is combining various ranges of training after the lower secondary (such as Matura-School, specialized middle school, school-based vocational programme, apprenticeship). Considering that the analysis of people free choices and opportunities require a dynamic approach, the empirical part is based on the longitudinal database TREE (Transitions from Education to Employment) which is data based on the PISA survey (Programme for International Student Assessment) having previously looked over students educational trajectories from compulsory education to employment. One created a typology of trajectories in order to analyse the different possible educational trajectories and to determine if some of these ways are more difficult or more linear. Then, one analyses characteristics of people belonging to the various trajectories.
