Abstract: The car pool, some qualitative data from Greater Lyon. - The utilization of a survey carried out in 1980-1981 in Greater Lyon has permitted an initial exploitation of the practices, still somewhat unknown, of the collective use of an individual motor car for trips between home and work. The "car pool" appears in this article as a fifth mode of transport, concerning 5,2% of the working force in the area. If a typical portrait of the regular user is absent from this study, certain other factors seem to play a determining role in the origin of this phenomenon. As for its forms of organization, they are diversified, but not without connection with the profile of the users themselves. Finally the article shows that a lack of knowledge of the secondary effects of the practice of "Car Pooling" burdens any fine evaluation attempt to form a transport policy which would include its development.
