Abstract: This study lays the foundations of an approach of innovation management in SMEs of mature industries, building on the notion of business model. The analytical framework developed is applied to the study of innovation practices in the SMEs of the French " Plastics Valley ". Two diametrically opposed business models have been identified between which the firms of the plastics processing industry are distributed : the " subcontracting " business model and the " co-conception / co-development " business model. The firms which have experienced the best economic outcomes are those which have integrated the innovation issues within a systemic reflection regarding the evolution of their business model.
