Abstract:
What do solidarity and filial piety mean in China from historical and current standpoints? Which lessons can be drawn about the state of welfare in China today? This paper shows that "solidarity" between generations, as wanted by Chinese hierarchs, exploits a remanufactured concept of filial piety and gives the market a role of which it would be deprived elsewhere. At the same time, this misappropriation of a "traditional" virtue operates the restoration of a social order in which individuals -- each in their own place -- would show no opposition.
