Abstract: Self-initiated repatriation (SIR) remains an under-researched topic. Applying Bourdieu's theory of practice (1972), we conducted a qualitative study and investigated SIR into the Danish, French, and German career field. We found that expatriation leads to a modification of the habitus and career capital. While economic capital issues were not found to play a major role, the modified habitus only appeared to affect the return into the Danish career field where self-initiated expatriation was valued negatively. Especially the modified set of cultural and social capital was pertinent for re-entering the French and German career field. Theoretical and practical implications are illustrated.
