Abstract: In the end of the 19th century the controversy on bimetallism divides the French liberal school into two opposite groups. The study of the arguments of both sides--bimetallists and monometallists--shows that this opposition is not only a theoretical one. We first point out that two important political issues interfere with this debate: firstly it overlaps the national question of the interests of the Banque de France; in addition, political stakes concerning the international role of France appear in the discussions on bimetallism. The consideration of these two issues allows us to give an explanation to the strong opposition between authors belonging to the same school: we highlight a difference between the advocates of bimetallism who extol the virtues of discretionary decisions promoting the national interests, and those of monometallism which defend the notion of rules in monetary policy.
