Abstract: This article aims at studying fairtrade chain governance in the global value chain framework. We underline first that increasing buyers' requirements on intrinsic quality of products have led to buyer-driven chain. Concerning extrinsic quality of products, notably social and environmental quality, chain have evolved towards co-driven chains between buyers and NGO managing labels in the case of certified chain, and co-driven chain between producers and activist buyers in the case of alternative chain.
