Abstract: Focusing on the sale of quinoa in France, this article proposes to analyse the governance of different fair trade channels. These channels (labelled integrated, FLO and bio-equitable) differ by the quality seals used (labels and brands), the type of guarantee offered to consumers (third party certification), the modes of coordination between actors and the possibilities of upgrading to producers. The article argues that different initiatives for fair trade occur in a context of competition. Owing to these competitive standards, the process of fair trade translates into particular modes of coordination which contradict the principle of fair trade itself.
