Abstract:
Due to the development of imperfect competition macroeconomics, Kalecki's "mark-up" shows a revival of interest beyond the Post-Keynesian tradition. This interest is explained by the fact that his interpretation in terms of market imperfections is widely confirmed. Such interpretation is subject to discussion because in his "Theory of the Economic Dynamics", Kalecki's analysis of prices makes reference neither to maximization behavior, nor to any knowledge of the demand. This model suggests a process of price formation in terms of competitive interaction between firms. It is however not free from inconsistencies. While implying the existence of centralized mechanisms supporting the communication of prices, it does not derive the degree of macroeconomic monopoly from the decision making process of individual firms.
