Abstract:
The analysis here aims to explain Smith's and Condorcet's ideas about public education, stemming from their common adhesion to the principles of the "Liberalism of Liberty". Their Liberalism makes public intervention necessary for education, so as to ensure the equality of natural rights and to preserve individuals against the damaging effects of the division of labour. But the state's prerogatives in regard to education vary according to the authors. It may therefore be asked whether there are not two distinct traditions within the "Liberalism of Liberty", which thus displays heterogeneity.
