Abstract:
Being balanced in one's job and more widely in one's life is one of the key factors of well-being and a criterion of career success. Among the individual and organizational factors determining this balance, we chose two personal factors, self-efficacy and locus of control, and an organizational variable, supervisory support. We conducted a questionnaire survey and got answers from 216 employees with very different backgrounds. The results validate the direct influence of locus of control on professional and on life balance, and the direct influence of self-efficacy on professional balance. We can also observe the moderating effect of supervisory support on the link between each of the personal variables and life balance. The supervisor would tend to help the person in order to allow him/her to reach a better balance between private and professional life, but the employee should mainly count on him/herself, on his/her personal efforts and perseverance to find a good professional balance. Managers and HR services can help people to maintain this balance by developing their personal skills or their autonomy through adequate evaluations and follow-up. Employees themselves, being actors of their own career, should try to develop their self-confidence and manage the development of their employability.
