Abstract:
A few management researchers in France are also consultants - and many in the United States. But most keep their consultancy work completely separate from their research. In academic management community jargon, consultancy means activities carried out in corporations, at their service, generating profits, whereas research is synonymous with the production of publications, usually academic articles, generating academic recognition and fame - and to a lesser extent, promotion and extra income - a little in France, more in the United States. However, we have noted that some consultants enter research to obtain a doctorate and then continue as post-doctoral students. The activities of the Academy Of Management, Management Consulting Division closely mirror this two-way flux: research professors attracted to consultancy and consultants attracted to research.
