Abstract: This paper asks whether male and female careers have converged over the long period in France, and if so in which sense. Data from the EIC (Échantillon Inter-régimes de Cotisants) 2001 panel are analysed to construct the careers of French private-sector employees. Two cohorts are considered, the first composed of individuals born in 1946 and the second of those born in 1962. Male and female careers are found to be very different in the first cohort. However, in the second cohort the careers of both sexes are both more similar to each other and different from those observed for men in the older cohort. Careers are now frequently long, but also more often interrupted for both sexes. There continues to be a wage gap between men and women, but also a significant rise in the heterogeneity of careers within each sex.
