Abstract: We can ask ourselves what is the reason of proliferation of local experiences of alternative indicators and we will see it is neither a passing phenomenon nor a coincidence. It is merely the reason these practical alternatives of quantification conducted by subnational territories in France and abroad, are at the heart of this article. Analyzed in the light of our involvement in the Grenoble project Ibest we can see that these projects have common characteristics and differences. All of them respond to social demands and participate to the improvement of knowledge and field action.
