“Victims” employability boundary objects in the outplacement of layoffs

Abstract:
As a result of the literature request for a methodological and conceptual renewal, this communication initiates an original approach for the study of social support in enterprise restructuring and downsizing : it analyzes the coordination arrangements of the network of actors involved in the outplacement process to examine the operationalization of the outplacement. These coordination artifacts are considered as boundary objects that convey an invisible infrastructure of interpretation of employability to the different social worlds of outplacement. A multi-level case study of the boundary objects of outplacement is conducted in a complex Layoffs procedure (Air Littoral airline group in 2004-2005, with 856 dismissals) and it analyses and sheds a light on six boundary objects, the way the actors use them and their employability infrastructure.
