Abstract:
This article seeks to understand the guarantee mechanisms implemented by the members of an alliance network that develops an innovation project: image, financial or on specific assets guarantees. On the one hand, we try to fill a void in the literature on these guarantees, taken to limit members' opportunism. On the other hand, we seek to identify the factors that influence the type of mechanisms used by the focal firm and/or the other members. We conducted an analysis over a period of 12 months on seven innovation projects. This research shows that the mechanisms vary according to the type of member and to the project advancement phase. Furthermore, according to the phase, mechanisms are established either unilaterally (during the development phase, only the broker uses guarantee mechanisms to protect his invention), or bilateral. Indeed, as the project goes on, most members also establish guarantees to protect their investments.
