Abstract:
All research on domestic use of the telephone shows that women spend more time on the phone than men. Many hypotheses are put forward to explain this predominantly female use: availability, skills, habits, aspirations, social roles, opportunities, constraints, etc. Through an analysis of the differentiation of roles, practices and perceptions relating to the telephone, the author interprets this characteristic as the paradoxical result of a single social construction: the inclination to use the telephone and the order to do so.
