Abstract: Social innovation receives various definitions that have similarities. This communication provides a ranking of these approaches depending on if they are a formalized or a more diffuse practice, depending whether they are a managerial or social approach from innovation. This dual opposition allows a classification of the practices and provides the understanding of a possible change in policies favoring social innovation. Those policies could be reduced to policies supporting a managerial practice managed like a business project, easier to support by the government at the expense of support for more societal changes.
