Abstract: Sea gigantism calls for land massification. The Betuwe Line and competing projects reflect this logic which tends to reorganize the hinterlands. In this perspective, we have shown that rail freight transport has many advantages that meet the relevant requirements of hinterland ports: massification, regularity, frequency and competition. The competition is strengthened both between the ports (spatial competition), but also on the rail (European liberalization process) which ensures greater competitiveness of hinterlands.
