Abstract: The dilemma of modernity - artificialism (Hayek) versus individualism (Dumont) - is also the basic problem of social justice and entirely structures normative economics, the welfarist one - "aggregative" justice (Bentham) versus unanimity of individuals (Pareto) -, as well as the"post-welfarist" one - "egalitarian" justice versus individual responsibility (Dworkin, Arneson) -. To conciliate so opposed terms comes up against the difficulty of utility comparisons in the first case (Kolm's and Varian's "no envy" and against the foundations of personal autonomy in the second case (Elster's "adaptative préférences", Roemer's "acceptable compromises"). In conclusion, such problems induce us to wonder about the possible existence of post-modern conceptions of social justice (Fleuerbaey, Van Parijs) which might defy them.
