Abstract:
[Extract] Since 1992 the Jules Dupuit prize is awarded at WCTR conferences. Marc Gaudry and Antti Talvitie were the first initiators and motivated the Finish Ramboll Group to sponsor this prize every three years. The start was made in Lyon at the 5th WCTR, which was held in the home country of Jules Dupuit. At the 14th WCTR held in Shanghai a special session was organised at the honour of Dupuit to present a comprehensive summary of the manifold contributions, which Dupuit has provided to the transportation research community. […] Against this background we found it challenging to invite colleagues to submit papers on Dupuit's work for a Special Issue of the Transport Policy journal. Most of the papers have been presented by draft versions to the special session on Jules Dupuit held at WCTR 2016 in Shanghai. This also holds for the comments, which were presented to guide the discussion. The result is a mix of papers, of which some of them are related closely to Dupuit's work while others take up the general ideas to place them into a modern research framework. Duplications of mentioning basic Dupuit concepts on utility measurement and pricing principles are desired side effects of this Special Issue, because they relate to different contexts and may lead to different conclusions such that the reader will find several ways to interpret the secret origins to modern transport economics provided by Jules Dupuit.
