Abstract:
The quest of a "sustainable urban form" has driven, in the international litterature, to the concept of the Compact City, with high densities and a mix of urban functions, which allows a greater use of alternative transport modes compared to automobile. The question is whether such a model, built on the basis of occidental cities' structure, can be transposed to the Chinese case. Yet Chinese cities present a high degree of compacity, due to the maoïst heritage of urban planification; local authorities have a strong power, and the public property of the urban soil can be considered as a strength to set up "sustainable" politics of daily mobility. The question seems crucial, as Chinese cities tend to sprawl out, and automobile owning is steadily increasing. In the last part of the article, the "spatial structure – automobile use" link is empirically tested, with considerations about levels of air pollutants emissions. Our results tend to confirm that, in the Chinese case also, high densities and a high degree of polycentrality tend to reduce distances travelled and polluting emissions.
