Abstract: In recent years, China faces major environmental problems, one of which is air pollution. This article aims to highlight the role, necessarily ambiguous, of Chinese cities in the fight against air pollution. After an inventory of the determinants of air pollution in China, we will discuss the two main areas in which Chinese cities will have a role to play: daily mobility first, mainly through actions of the central authority and the rise of an urban middle class who are increasingly concerned about the environment.
