Abstract: Philosophe anglais de renommée mondiale, Derek Parfit fut membre d'All Souls College à Oxford, prestigieuse institution anglaise entièrement dévouée à la recherche académique. Il enseigna également aux universités de New-York, d'Harvard et de Rutgers. Né à Chengdu, dans la province du Sichuan en République populaire de Chine, puis éduqué à Eton, Parfit s'orienta tout d'abord vers la poésie puis vers l'histoire moderne, dont il fut diplômé par l'Université d'Oxford en 1964.
