Abstract:
The archives bequeathed by Alphonse de Poitiers, the brother of Louis IX (Saint Louis), are an invaluable object of study. These documents, which shed light on the levers of government that a provincial prince could avail himself of, offer a counterpoint to the overly smooth account of the Saint-King who in fact had to face a great deal of opposition.
