Abstract: In the closing years of the nineteenth century in the United States, Charlotte Perkins Gilman emphasised the connection between the rules governing the socio-economic institutions of her time and those of home economics. She called for radical transformations of the economy of the home as a way of promoting the "new woman" which would reduce social tensions and improve the economy. Gilman's most valuable contribution to economics was that she permanently made gender economics a decisive analytical framework for her successors to use in many of their own works.
