Abstract: The "demographic transition" is defined as a period during which mortality and birth rates move from high to low levels. During this period, fertility, after stagnating at a high level, declines as newborn and child survival rates improve. For European countries, it has undoubtedly been over since the 1970s due to low infant mortality rates. European countries are therefore in a post-transitional period. It is important to ask how the fertility of European nations is evolving in the post-transitional period.
