Abstract: Even though the political theorist James Harrington (1611–1677) has sometimes been acclaimed as a forerunner of Marxist views—mainly on account of his seeming economic determinism—his work has been mostly overlooked by historians of economic thought. This paper argues that beyond his dubious claim to fame as a seventeenth-century Marx, other aspects of Harrington's thought deserve consideration, in particular his procedural approach to political justice and its consequences.
