Abstract:
This paper presents a semi-documentary account of the joys and sufferings of the editor of a scientific journal. We provide a mental cost-benefit analysis of editorship, the laborious production of a common good that is euphemistically defined as ‘organizing peer-reviews of research papers' (of strongly varying quality). The representative editor – for the sake of simplicity referred to as R – is portrayed in typical interaction with authors, reviewers, publishers, co-editors, the editorial self and other potentially malfunctioning agents in the system. Our study is herewith published even though it does not arrive at any results that would justify claims to originality.
