Abstract:
Through the study of monetary finds in two northern Italian port towns, Genoa and Aquileia, this article aims to understand the circulation of coins in the very specific context of port facilities. The analysis of the economy of these port installations, which are hubs of goods and means of exchange, and areas of concentration of merchant trades and banks, provides a better understanding of the organisation of monetary exchanges during Antiquity. The sites of Genoa and Aquileia have the particularity of being located on two opposite coasts of northern Italy: the Ligurian coast overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic coast. A comparison with the port facilities of Narbonne, Lattes, Pozzuoli and Delos completes the economic data on the port sites open to the Mediterranean
