Appropriation of the Electronic Patient Record by Nurses in an Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: In the healthcare field, the Electronic Patient's Record (EPR) has become a compulsory requirement. The ob-jective of this research is to explore the conditions of adaptation and appropriation of the EPR by nurses in an intensive care unit in a regional and university hospital centre. Qualitative research based on semi-directed in-terviews was conducted with eight nurses. Their experiences provided insights into the human, technical, cul-tural or identity-related factors at stake in the process of learning digital technologies in the workplace. We have highlighted that the generational approach didn't predict future appropriation. Instead, the identification of one's own training needs appears to be of primary importance in learning. We were also able to demonstrate that, while the changes in professional identity resulting from the introduction of the electronic patient record were generally accepted by nurses, they also proved to be a source of stress. Despite the technical and identity-related constraints posed by the EPR, its appropriation is the result of learning in the work situation, supported by the nurses' motivation and commitment.
