Abstract:
In the context of climate change and the alarming loss of biodiversity, there is an urgent need for policy makers to consider the environmental impact of any policy. As a result, economic environmental valuation is playing an increasing role in decision making. The aim of this chapter is to discuss why and how we value ecosystem services. We first review the theoretical background of environmental valuation. We then explore the empirical literature on environmental valuation, which can be divided into two general approaches: revealed preference and stated preference. While revealed preference approaches examine the actual behaviour of users of ecosystem services, stated preference approaches are survey based and elicit people's intended future behaviour. Finally, we discuss research perspectives and the difficulties that need to be overcome in order to economically value the ecosystem service of biocontrol.
