Abstract:
This article analyses the erasing from memory of the Union de Lille, a consumers' cooperative at the heart of Lille's workers and socialist movement, which was consigned to oblivion over the course of the 20th century. Based on press archives and those of the cooperative and the Socialist Party, as well as on interviews with a limited number of actors who actually knew the Union, the article highlights mutations in the cooperative movement, the party and the city, as well as the role of their leaders in this "manufactured forgetting". Finally, it examines the way in which this historic and collective effort can contribute to forms of memorial resistance.
