Abstract: Taking the launch vehicle segment as a case study, this exploratory study examines the dynamics of transformation within the space ecosystem from the perspective of how established players are adapting their portfolios of scientific and technological expertise and their R&D policies. To this end, we model the knowledge base of two companies emblematic of the new space economy: SpaceX and Blue Origin. We then examine the evolution of the knowledge base of the long-established space company ArianeGroup, comparing it with the characteristics of the knowledge bases of the two American companies.
