Abstract: The arms industry in France has always been centralised, with national champions, relatively successful in exports. There is normally no competition between the public and private sectors. The DGA (Délégation générale à l'Armement) is the guardian of the defence industry. There is generally no discrimination for French-owned companies. The big companies are powerful, but with the end of the Cold War coming, they will have to renew themselves, notably through innovation, government purchases and the opening up of new arms exports. The profile of the companies is not standard. Several companies dominate, notably Thomson-CSF, Aérospatiale, Dassault Aviation, DCN, GIAT, Matra, SNECMA, SNPE or Sextant Avionique.
