Teacher quality, family background and student performance in Ecuador

Abstract: This study investigates the influence of teacher quality and parental education on student performance in standardized tests across four subjects: math, natural science, social science, and language. Using student data from Ecuadorian students between 2015 and 2016, the analysis explores the differential impacts of socioeconomic factors and teaching resources. Findings highlight significant variances in the effects of teacher quality and parental education across subjects, with teacher quality positively influencing outcomes regardless of socioeconomic disparities. Additionally, cognitive skills and access to educational resources show varying levels of importance. The results emphasize the need for policies addressing teacher training and resource allocation.
