Abstract: Farms are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards and the international geopolitical and economic context, which determine economic performance. Farm incomes vary considerably between years and types of production. They may be subject to extreme systemic shocks but subsequently demonstrate a disparity in evolution. To help shed more light on the reasons for this disparity, this study examines the determinants of farmers' ability to adapt and recover from major shocks, including financial ones. We focus in particular on the roles of personal factors such as risk aversion and ambiguity. Our study is based on a survey conducted in 2024 among French farmers, all types of production combined. A multinomial linear regression was applied to assess French farms according to their adaptability, sensitivity to economic shocks and stability of results and yield over time. Subsequently, based on a multiple correspondence analysis, we distinguished three profiles of farmers defined by their adaptability: Resilient, Robust and Vulnerable. These results provide concrete recommendations to improve risk management and foster cooperation among farmers within "communities of practice".
