Abstract:
The document presents an in-depth historical study of the conflict concerning the Sandjak of Alexandretta (today the Hatay province in Turkey). This territory, located in the Near East, was the object of tensions between Turkey and France (mandatory power of Syria and Lebanon) between 1934 and 1939. The author, Pierre Bazantay, provides a detailed analysis of this diplomatic and territorial crisis. It begins with an Introduction that sets the context and the general political situation on the eve of the conflict. This introduction notably recalls contemporary events in Europe, Syria-Lebanon, and Turkey. The study is then divided into three major chronological phases of the conflict. The First Phase covers the period from 1936 up to June 1937. It describes the beginning of the crisis and the first attempts at resolution. The Second Phase explores the evolution of the conflict during the following months. The Third Phase details the final developments leading to the annexation of the Sandjak by Turkey in 1939. Documents from the time are also included to support the argument. The work concludes with a general Conclusion. This conclusion summarizes the stakes and consequences of the conflict. It also offers a synthesis of the theses present at the time: the Turkish thesis and the French thesis. The website is a raw historical document, focusing exclusively on Pierre Bazantay's original text.
