Abstract: There are in France around a hundred territories where crafts businesses are concentrated. These « crafts pôles » resulting from the economic history of a territory, a desire for local development or (less often) an urban development project. Concepts borrowed from economy and sociology (cluster, district, innovative milieu, creative space, local scene) can be used to propose for the first time a typology of « crafts pôles ». That typology can be scaled with two main characteristics : cooperation – particularly dyadic relationships – and territorial anchoring. Ultimately, the crafts scene appears to constitute the most complete and successful form of territorial ecosystem for crafts. The role that third places could play in the transition of different categories of « crafts pôles » towards the crafts scene will be examined in conclusion.
