Abstract:
Current solutions for combined rail-road transport on standard-gauge lines include the "rolling highway" (Switzerland, Austria) and the rail-based "rolling motorway" utilizing Modalohr low-loader wagon technology. Comparable approaches include the large-gauge service operated by Eurotunnel between Calais and Dover, as well as combined container transport services run by various specialized operators. The R-shift-R concept has undergone an initial economic validation using a simulation model. Within a long-term strategic framework, this study examines the feasibility of structuring a competitive rail freight offering through the implementation of disruptive innovations such as R-shift-R, thereby optimizing the use of existing infrastructure and enhancing opportunities for mixed freight and passenger traffic.
