Pivotal Voting and the Emperor's New Clothes
Howard Margolis
No 9926, Working Papers from Harris School of Public Policy Studies, University of Chicago
Abstract:
This is a set of short papers commenting on the work on pivotal voting initiated by Austin-Smith & Banks (1996). It covers the ASB paper, plus a particularly prominent sequence of follow-on results by Feddersen & Pesendorfer (1996, 1998, 1999a, 1999b). The aim is to reproduce the results in a mathematically undemanding way, and comment on the empirically problematic nature of both assumptions and inferences.
