Abstract: The paper focuses on narration acquisition, which is a process believed to be at least partly related to school teaching practices. The problem of constructing a story with the help of a visual image is discussed through an analysis of children’s written responses to two photographs, different in some key respects of the way in which their characters and settings are presented. The range of visual elements which can effectively trigger production of different elements of a story is also established.
