Demographics of Population Ageing in Hungary

László Hablicsek

No 207, Discussion Paper from Center for Intergenerational Studies, Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University

Abstract: The paper deals with population ageing from demographic aspects. It is a general trend in human development. A new accelerated stage with shrinking labour force has commenced. There is a redefinition of the young, working-age and old-age groups. Trends in schooling, postponement in family formation and childbearing are also connected with ageing in this respect. The cohort ageing can also be defined. Here the basic inequality between the cohort and period burdens of support is presented and the main strategies for adjustment are outlined. Roma and immigrant sub-populations modify the tempo of ageing in Hungary. Educational change is of great importance in coping with the challenges.
