Towards a Strategy for Increasing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Impact on the Romanian Economy

M. Radulescu

No 9617, CERT Discussion Papers from Centre for Economic Reform and Transformation, Heriot Watt University

Abstract: The paper is comprised of the following: (i) an analysis of the FDI impacts on the Romanian economy; (ii) a survey based on the replies to a questionnaire (on FDI in Romania) sent from CERT to British Companies; and (iii) a discussion of the causes determining the relatively low levels of FDI in Romania and progress towards a global Romanian strategy for increasing FDI inflows. This paper has two main aims: (i) to emphasise the role of FDI in improving the Romanian economy's performance; and (ii) to find the main reasons which have led to smaller FDI inflows per capita in Romania in comparison with other ex-communist CEECs and to recommend policies aimed at improving the actual state of affairs.
