Richard Blundell (r.blundell@ucl.ac.uk), Pierre Chiappori, Thierry Magnac and Costas Meghir

No W98/20, IFS Working Papers from Institute for Fiscal Studies

Abstract: In this paper we develop the collective labour supply framework to allow for corner solutions and nonparticipation in employment. We derive conditions for the complete non parametric identification of individual preferences. We extend our results to allow for unobserved heterogeneity and show identification in the linear labor supply framework. We derive testable implications of the collective approach. We apply our results to the estimation of a collective labor supply model for married couples.
