Opportunities and Constraints in the Growth of Production of Oilseeds and Edible Oils in a Systems Framework

Abstract: In recent years there has been an alarming gap between demand and supply of edible oils. This has necessitated an import of edible oils worth about Rs. 1,000 crores per annum. The present edible oil demand-supply gap to widen substantially by the year 2000 A.D. This realization has led to oilseed production being included in 20 point programme also setting up of a technology mission for the same. The major objective of all the interventions and government policy supports is to achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil production in the near future. This paper is designed in the achievements of self-sufficiency objective and key areas of policy action. The analysis is presented in a system framework.
