Two Characterizations of the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives Assumption

Abstract: In this paper we propose alternative characterizations of the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) assumption, as conceived in bargaining theory. We provide two distinct characterizations, which, allows us to view both the deficiencies as well as the advantages of the IIA axiom from a new angle.
