Abstract:
This article examines compensation and incentive schemes as they are contained in a major job contract between Codelco and its main labor union. Costs and productivity standards at the copper mining industry in Chile are the main background in the analysis. Main recommendation is pursuing contract reforms aimed to reward work efforts and discipline, as opposed to exogenous factors. Main warning deals with the risk of eroding productivity as a result of incentives misalignment.
