Abstract: This report analyses the informal sector of Benin in 1985. A first part examines the characteristics and potentialities of the sector as an important provider of productive employment, training and contributor to rapid economic growth. The second part studies the constraints of the production units, mainly in respect of equipment, level of training, taxes, finance, and lack of links with the other sectors of the economy. In the final part, proposals are formulated to enhance the contribution of the informal sector to the development of the country. At the level of the production units, assistance is proposed, especially for the small mechanics. In macro terms, the following measures, among others, are envisaged: a better data collection, the coordination of the actions for the informal sector, a streamlining of the tax structure, the ploughing back of some of the earnings of commerce into production, etc.
