Enquete sur le profil technologique des micro-entreprises du secteur metallique de kigali et butare (Rwanda)

A. Barampama

ILO Working Papers from International Labour Organization

Abstract: The survey of 53 microenterprises specialised in the production of metal doors and windows in the two major towns of the country highlights two common features: all have less than ten years of activity and concentrate in urban areas where the building industry is expanding. Legislation developed in early 80s in the field of urban settlements and construction certainly contributed to the dynamic growth of the metal working sector. A key role is played by technological Innovation and the capacity to introduce technologies adapted to local conditions to stimulate growth. The lesson to be drawn at the policy formulation level is that a number of practical measures should be identified to promote access to technological Innovation sources, including training, both formal and informal such as stages and study tours. This should happen within a favourable economic environment to stimulate consumption of products supplied by the sector and at the same time improve its capacity to better respond to the needs of the local market.
